Tony Stewart Career Overview

2023

  • Scored first career NHRA event win April 16 during the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when he drove a Top Alcohol dragster to a .008 margin of victory. The win made Stewart the only driver to win races at each venue at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He won a United States Auto Club (USAC) Silver Crown race on Oct. 18, 1997 at The Dirt Track, he swept the USAC Sprint/Midget “doubleheader” on Nov. 30, 2002 at the Las Vegas Bullring, he won the preliminary round of the inaugural Las Vegas Sprint Car Nationals on Nov. 26, 2010 at The Dirt Track, and he won a NASCAR Cup Series race on March 11, 2012 at Las Vegas’ 1.5-mile oval.
  • Scored second career NHRA event win May 7 at Indianapolis Raceway Park when he drove a Top Alcohol dragster to a .051 margin of victory.
  • Won All Star Circuit of Champions TQ Midgets feature June 27 at Tony Stewart Speedway in Columbus, Ind.
  • Scored third career NHRA event win Aug. 6 at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, when he drove a Top Alcohol dragster to victory when his competitor experienced a mechanical failure.
  • Won SRX Series race Aug. 10 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.
  • Scored fourth career NHRA event win Sept. 18 at Maple Grove when he drove a Top Alcohol dragster to a .040 margin of victory. The win gave Stewart the lead in the Top Alcohol championship.
  • Finished 2023 as the runner-up in the Top Alcohol championship and was named Person of the Year by the NHRA National Dragster All-Star Team panel and was voted Top Alcohol Driver of the Year by fans.

2022

  • Inducted into National Sprint Car Hall of Fame on June 4.
  • Won two SRX Series races – June 25 at South Boston (Va.) Speedway and July 16 at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri.
  • Won 12th Knoxville (Iowa) Nationals championship as a World of Outlaws car owner with driver Donny Schatz on Aug. 13.
  • Made NHRA driving debut Oct. 28 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway during the NHRA Nevada Nationals. Driving a Top Alcohol dragster, Stewart ran a 5.219 ET at 276.52 mph in his first-ever competitive NHRA pass. Stewart was just .021 of a second off the day’s early leader, Kim Parker’s 5.198-second elapsed time, but faster than Parker’s speed (272.34 mph). Stewart eventually raced all the way to the finals and nearly won the event, losing to Madison Payne by .0002 of a second.

2021

  • Won final feature of the inaugural Wild Wing Shootout 410 sprint car event Jan. 24 at Arizona Speedway in San Tan Valley. Stewart set a new track record in qualifying to start from the pole. He led all 35 laps en route to the win.
  • Won All-Star Circuit of Champions 410 Winged Sprint Car feature April 15 at Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica.
  • The Bartholomew (Ind.) County 4-H Fairgrounds where Stewart first began racing in his home state of Indiana was renamed “Tony Stewart Speedway” in a ceremony on June 29.
  • Won All Star Circuit of Champions TQ Midgets feature June 29 at Tony Stewart Speedway.
  • Won the inaugural SRX Series championship July 17 at the Nashville (Tenn.) Fairgrounds Speedway by 45 points over runner-up Ernie Francis Jr. Two feature race wins in the six-race short-track series – June 19 at Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway and June 26 at Eldora Speedway – propelled Stewart to the title. He was the series’ only multi-race winner.
  • On Oct. 10, announced the expansion of Tony Stewart Racing into the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series in 2022 with two fulltime entries – one in Top Fuel for Leah Pruett and one in Funny Car for Matt Hagan.
  • Won the “Rumble in Fort Wayne” USAC Midget feature for the 12th time Dec. 18 at the 1/10th-mile Allen County (Ind.) War Memorial Coliseum.

2020

  • Inducted into NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2020 on Jan. 31.
  • Inducted into National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) Hall of Fame Class of 2020 on Feb. 1.
  • Won All Star Circuit of Champions TQ Midgets feature Sept. 26 at Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds.

2019

  • Voted into NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2020 with Joe Gibbs, Bobby Labonte, Waddell Wilson and Buddy Baker on May 22.
  • Inducted into Motorsports Hall of Fame of America Class of 2019 March 13 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
  • Inducted into North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame Class of 2019 Sept. 23 in Mooresville.
  • Inducted into Texas Motorsports Hall of Fame Class of 2019 Nov. 2 in Fort Worth.
  • Won All-Star Circuit of Champions 410 Winged Sprint Car feature Feb. 2 at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla. Started from the pole and led all 30 laps.

  • Won USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour feature May 26 at Old No. 1 Speedway in Harrisburg, Ark.
  • Won USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour feature May 27 at Lexington (Tenn.) 104 Speedway.
  • Won United Midget Racing Association (UMRA) King of the TQ Midget Racing Series feature July 4 at Rush County Fairgrounds in Rushville, Ind.
  • Won UMRA King of the TQ Midget Racing Series feature July 9 at Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds.
  • Won All-Star Circuit of Champions 410 Winged Sprint Car feature July 28 at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa.
  • Debuted Ford Performance Stewart 410 (FPS 410) sprint car engine Aug. 16 at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich.
  • Won Interstate Racing Association (IRA) Outlaw Sprint Series 410 Winged Sprint Car feature Aug. 31 at the Plymouth (Wis.) Dirt Track, earning the first victory for the FPS 410 engine.
  • Won UMRA King of the TQ Midget Racing Series feature Sept. 2 at Rush County Fairgrounds in Rushville, Ind.
  • Won USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour feature Oct. 18 at Chatham (La.) Speedway.
  • Won both portions of the “Rumble in Fort Wayne” USAC Midget double-feature Dec. 27-28 to collect his record 10th and 11th wins, respectively, in the event. It was the third time Stewart swept the two-night affair and, in collecting his 10th win on Dec. 27, Stewart broke the record for most indoor midget wins all-time in North America, a mark previously held by the late Rich Vogler.

2018

  • Won USCS feature from the pole March 3 at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss.
  • Won UMRA King of the TQ Midget Racing Series feature July 10 at Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds.
  • Won All-Star Circuit of Champions 410 Winged Sprint Car race Aug. 26 at BAPS Motor Speedway in York Haven, Pa.
  • Won USCS Deep South Regional Series championship race Oct. 20 at Southern Raceway.
  • Won USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour feature Nov. 9 at Bubba Raceway Park.
  • Won first NASCAR Xfinity Series owners’ championship Nov. 17 at Homestead-Miami Speedway as co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR).
  • Won ninth World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship as a car owner with Schatz. Clinched title Nov. 1.
  • Inducted into Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame on May 24.

2017

  • Won USCS Spring Speed Xplosion feature April 1 at Bubba Raceway Park. It was Stewart’s first victory of any kind since retiring as a NASCAR driver.
  • Won UMRA King of the TQ Midget Racing Series feature July 12 at Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds.
  • Won All-Star Circuit of Champions 410 Winged Sprint Car race July 24 at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway in Imperial, Pa.
  • Won 11th Knoxville Nationals championship as a World of Outlaws car owner with Schatz on Aug. 12.
  • Won eighth World of Outlaws championship as a car owner with Schatz. Clinched title Nov. 2.

2016

  • Retired from NASCAR driving career following NASCAR Cup Series season finale Nov. 20 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Ended career with three championships, 49 wins, 15 poles, 187 top-fives, 308 top-10s and 12,815 laps led in 618 career starts.
  • Finished 15th in NASCAR Cup Series point standings as a member of the 16-driver playoffs.
  • Won Cup Series race June 26 at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway. It was Stewart’s third win at Sonoma, his eighth on a road course and his 49th and final Cup Series victory, putting him alone at 13th on the all-time NASCAR Cup Series win list.
  • Inducted into USAC Hall of Fame on July 21.
  • Won seventh World of Outlaws championship as a car owner with Schatz. Clinched title Oct. 27.

2015

  • Finished 28th in NASCAR Cup Series point standings.
  • Purchased All Star Circuit of Champions Series in January.
  • Won 10th Knoxville Nationals championship as a World of Outlaws car owner with Schatz on Aug. 15.
  • Won sixth World of Outlaws championship as a car owner with Schatz. Clinched title Oct. 3.

2014

  • Finished 25th in NASCAR Cup Series point standings after missing three races.
  • Won Cup Series pole April 5 at Texas. It was Stewart’s second Cup Series pole at Texas and his 15th career Cup Series pole.
  • Won 360 Sprints on Dirt (SOD) Winged Sprint Car race July 18 at Tri-City Motor Speedway in Auburn, Mich. It was Stewart’s first race victory of any kind after breaking his right leg in a Sprint Car crash on Aug. 5, 2013 at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
  • Won ninth Knoxville Nationals championship as a World of Outlaws car owner with Schatz on Aug. 9.
  • Set the fastest lap in a stock car at a 1.5-mile oval when Stewart turned a lap of 26.985 seconds at 200.111 mph on Oct. 31 during Cup Series qualifying at Texas. It was the first time a stock car surpassed the 200 mph mark on a 1.5-mile oval.
  • Won fifth World of Outlaws championship as a car owner with Schatz. Clinched title Nov. 6.

2013

  • Finished 29th in NASCAR Cup Series point standings after missing last 15 races of season due to injury.
  • Won Cup Series race June 2 at Dover (Del.). It was Stewart’s third Cup Series win at Dover and his 48th career Cup Series victory.
  • Won NASCAR Xfinity Series race Feb. 23 at Daytona. It was Stewart’s seventh victory in the season-opening Xfinity Series race, and it tied him with the legendary Dale Earnhardt for most Xfinity Series wins at Daytona.
  • Won Empire Super Sprint (ESS) 360 Winged Sprint Car race April 6 at Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway. Prior to winning 30-lap feature, Stewart set a new track qualifying record (17.168 seconds at 111.053 mph) and won his eight-lap heat race.
  • Earned the prestigious NMPA Myers Brothers Award. Bobby and Billy Myers were early pioneers in the sport of NASCAR, and the award named after them is given to someone who has made the greatest positive impact on the sport of stock car racing that year.
  • Won eighth Knoxville Nationals championship as a World of Outlaws car owner with Schatz on Aug. 10.
  • Won 13th USAC championship as a car owner with driver Bobby East, who took the USAC Silver Crown championship Sept. 21. It was Stewart’s seventh car owner championship in the Silver Crown division.
  • Won 14th USAC championship as a car owner with driver Bryan Clauson, who took the USAC Sprint Car championship Nov. 2. It was Stewart’s seventh car owner championship in the Sprint Car division.

2012

  • Finished ninth in NASCAR Cup Series point standings as a member of the 12-driver playoffs.
  • Won three Cup Series point races – March 11 at Las Vegas, March 25 at Fontana (Calif.) and July 7 at Daytona.
  • Cup Series win at Las Vegas was his first at the track, leaving Darlington (S.C.) and Kentucky as the only active tracks where Stewart has yet to record a Cup Series victory.
  • Cup Series win at Daytona was his fourth point-paying Cup Series win at the track and his 18th overall victory at Daytona, putting him second behind Dale Earnhardt on the track’s all-time win list. Victory also gave Stewart sole possession of 14th on the all-time Sprint Cup win list, as his 47th career win surpassed the total of 1956 and 1957 champion and NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Buck Baker.
  • Won the non-points Gatorade Duel Cup Series race Feb. 23 at Daytona to earn a third-place starting spot in the Daytona 500.
  • Won Cup Series pole Aug. 31 at Atlanta.
  • Won All-Star Circuit of Champions 410 Winged Sprint Car race Feb. 11 at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga.
  • Won American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) Midwest Region 360 Winged Sprint Car race April 21 at Eagle (Neb.) Raceway.
  • Won the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown – a 75-lap charity Late Model stock-car race – April 26 at Richmond (Va.).
  • Won second career World of Outlaws A-Feature on July 17 at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa.
  • Won National Racing Alliance (NRA) Sprint Invaders 360 Winged Sprint Car Series event July 28 at Eldora Speedway.
  • Won 360 Winged Sprint Car race July 30 at Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario, Canada.
  • Won third career World of Outlaws A-Feature on July 31 at Ohsweken Speedway.
  • Won United Racing Company (URC) 360 Winged Sprint Car Series event Aug. 3 at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
  • Won Patriot Sprint Tour/URC 360 Winged Sprint Car Series event Aug. 10 at Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, N.Y.
  • Won ASCS 360 Winged Sprint Car race Aug. 18 at Plymouth (Ind.) Speedway.
  • Won “Battle at the Center” Midget race Dec. 15 at Southern Illinois Center in DuQuoin.
  • Won seventh Knoxville Nationals championship as a World of Outlaws car owner with Schatz on Aug. 12.

2011

  • Earned third NASCAR Cup Series championship by virtue of a tiebreaker. Stewart and Carl Edwards finished the season tied, with each driver accumulating 2,403 points. But Stewart’s five victories trumped Edwards’ one, and per the NASCAR rulebook, Stewart was awarded the championship.
  • Stewart became the first driver/owner to win Cup Series title since Alan Kulwicki in 1992.
  • Won five Cup Series point races – Sept. 19 at Chicagoland (Joliet, Ill.), Sept. 25 at New Hampshire, Oct. 30 at Martinsville (Va.), Nov. 6 at Texas and Nov. 20 at Homestead (Fla.).
  • Those five victories all came during the 10-race playoffs. Stewart twice scored back-to-back wins – Chicagoland/New Hampshire and Martinsville/Texas. The successive wins marked the eighth and ninth time, respectively, that Stewart has won back-to-back Cup Series races.
  • With back-to-back victories at Chicagoland and New Hampshire, Stewart became just the second driver in the eight-year history of the playoffs to open the playoffs with consecutive wins.
  • Stewart’s victory at Chicagoland was his series-leading third win at that track and the 40th of his Cup Series career.
  • Won Cup Series pole Oct. 13 at Charlotte (N.C.).
  • Won Xfinity Series race Feb. 19 at Daytona. It was Stewart’s fourth straight victory in the season-opening Xfinity Series race and his sixth in the last seven years.

  • Won sixth Knoxville Nationals championship as a World of Outlaws car owner with Schatz on Aug. 13.

  • Named Racer of the Year and Oval Racer of the Year by RACER magazine.
  • Named Driver of the Year by the International Motorsports Hall of Fame for the second time.
  • Named Driver of the Year by the NMPA for the third time.
  • Named Driver of the Year by the Eastern Motorsports Press Association (EMPA) for the fourth time.
  • Named Driver of the Year by the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) for the first time and named to the AARWBA All America First-Team for the 10th time.
  • Named Driver of the Year by The Daytona Beach (Fla.) News-Journal.

2010

  • Finished seventh in NASCAR Cup Series point standings as a member of the 12-driver playoffs.
  • Won two Cup Series point races – Sept. 5 at Atlanta and Oct. 10 at Fontana.
  • Won two Cup Series poles – April 16 at Texas and July 30 at Pocono (Pa.). The pole at Texas was Stewart’s first Cup Series pole in 155 races.
  • Won Xfinity Series race Feb. 13 at Daytona.
  • Won dirt Modified race April 22 at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway.
  • Won dirt Modified race May 12 at Eldora Speedway.
  • Made World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series debut July 14 at Limaland (Ohio) Motorsports Park in the Brad Doty Classic. Finished third in the C-main.
  • Won back-to-back NRA Sprint Invaders 360 Winged Sprint Car Series events July 16-17 at Eldora Speedway.
  • Won preliminary round of the inaugural Las Vegas Sprint Car Nationals on Nov. 26 at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was Stewart’s first American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) victory in only his second ASCS start.
  • Won ninth USAC championship as a car owner with driver Levi Jones, who took the USAC Silver Crown championship on Oct. 17. It was Stewart’s fifth car owner championship in the Silver Crown division.
  • Won 10th USAC championship as a car owner with Jones, who took the USAC Sprint Car championship on Nov. 6. It was Stewart’s fifth car owner championship in the Sprint Car division.

2009

  • Finished sixth in NASCAR Cup Series point standings as a member of 12-driver playoffs.
  • Won four Cup Series point races – June 7 at Pocono, July 4 at Daytona, Aug. 10 at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) and Oct. 4 at Kansas.
  • Victory at Pocono was the 34th of his career but first as a driver/owner. It was the first point-paying Cup Series win by a driver/owner since Sept. 27, 1998 when Ricky Rudd won at Martinsville.
  • Win at Daytona marked the first time a driver/owner won multiple Cup Series races in a season since 1997 when Rudd won at Dover and Indianapolis.
  • Victory at Watkins Glen was Stewart’s fifth at the track, making him the winningest Cup Series driver at Watkins Glen. It was also his seventh career Cup Series win on a road course.
  • Win at Kansas tied him with 1970 Cup Series champion Bobby Isaac for 18th on the all-time Cup Series victory list.
  • Took the Cup Series point lead for the first time as a driver/owner after finishing second May 31 at Dover. Stewart left the track with a 46-point advantage over second-place Jeff Gordon. It marked the first time a driver/owner had led the points since Nov. 15, 1992, when Alan Kulwicki won the championship by 10 points over Bill Elliott at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
  • Won the non-points NASCAR All-Star Race May 16 at Charlotte.
  • Won Xfinity Series race Feb. 14 at Daytona.
  • Won Prelude to the Dream all-star dirt late model race Sept. 9 at Eldora Speedway for the second straight year and third time overall.
  • Won first career 410 Winged Sprint Car race July 7 in inaugural Lou Blaney Memorial Classic at Sharon Speedway near Hartford, Ohio.
  • Won dirt late model race April 23 at Paducah International Raceway.

2008

  • Finished ninth in NASCAR Cup Series point standings as a member of 12-driver playoffs.
  • Won Cup Series race Oct. 5 at Talladega (Ala.). It was Stewart’s 33rd career Cup Series win, his first of the season and his first at Talladega, a track where he had finished second on six previous occasions.
  • Won five Xfinity Series races – Feb. 16 at Daytona, Feb. 25 at Fontana, April 26 at Talladega, May 9 at Darlington and June 28 at New Hampshire.
  • Win at Daytona was Stewart’s third victory in the season-opening Xfinity Series race in four years. With his win the next week at Fontana, Stewart scored back-to-back Xfinity Series victories for the first time in his career. His wins at Talladega and Darlington were Stewart’s first wins of any kind at those respective tracks.
  • Scored two Xfinity Series poles – Feb. 15 at Daytona and April 26 at Talladega.
  • Won the “Rumble in Fort Wayne” USAC Midget feature for the seventh time Dec. 26.
  • Won Prelude to the Dream all-star dirt late model race June 4 at Eldora Speedway for the second time.
  • Won second World of Outlaws championship as a car owner with Schatz. Clinched title on Oct. 31.

2007

  • Finished sixth in NASCAR Cup Series point standings as a member of 12-driver playoffs.
  • Won three Cup Series point races – July 15 at Chicagoland, July 29 at Indianapolis and Aug. 12 at Watkins Glen.
  • The successive wins at Chicagoland and Indianapolis marked the seventh time Stewart scored back-to-back Cup Series victories. Stewart’s victory at Chicagoland was his second at the Illinois track, while his win at Indianapolis was his second at the Brickyard. His Watkins Glen victory was his sixth on a road course and his fourth at The Glen.
  • Won the non-points Gatorade Duel Cup Series race Feb. 15 at Daytona for the second time in his career.
  • Won the non-points Budweiser Shootout Cup Series race Feb. 10 at Daytona for the third time in his career.
  • Won the 21st annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals on Jan. 13 at the Tulsa (Okla.) Expo Raceway for the second time. Became just the fourth driver to score multiple Chili Bowl victories, joining Sammy Swindell, Cory Kruseman and Dan Boorse.
  • Won the “Rumble in Fort Wayne” USAC Midget feature for the sixth time Dec. 29.
  • Competed for the fifth time in the Rolex 24 Hours At Daytona on Jan. 27-28 for Howard-Boss Motorsports with co-drivers Butch Leitzinger and Andy Wallace. Team finished 48th after mechanical trouble hampered the trio throughout the event.
  • Won seventh USAC championship as a car owner with Levi Jones, who took the USAC Sprint Car championship Nov. 10. It was Stewart’s third car owner championship in the Sprint Car division and his second straight.

2006

  • Finished 11th in NASCAR Cup Series point standings.

  • Earned second NASCAR Cup Series championship by 35 points over Greg Biffle by virtue of 15th-place finish in season finale Nov. 20 at Homestead as a member of 10-driver playoffs.
  • Won five Cup Series point races – June 26 at Sonoma, July 2 at Daytona, July 17 at New Hampshire, Aug. 7 at Indianapolis and Aug. 14 at Watkins Glen.
  • Those five point-paying wins came in the span of seven races, with back-to-back race victories at Sonoma and Daytona and again at Indianapolis and Watkins Glen. It was the fourth and fifth time, respectively, that Stewart scored back-to-back point-paying victories.
  • The road course wins at Sonoma and Watkins Glen marked Stewart’s fourth and fifth career road course wins, respectively.

  • Won two 360 Winged Sprint Car features in Winged Outlaw Warrior-sanctioned events at Sedalia’s (Mo.) State Fair Speedway. The first win came April 16 and the second was May 7.
  • Competed for the second time in the Rolex 24 Hours At Daytona on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 for Howard-Boss Motorsports with co-drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Andy Wallace. Team led 355 of 526 laps and had a commanding five-lap advantage before mechanical problems less than 20 minutes short of the finish ended shot at victory and placed team a disappointing fourth.
  • Won third Knoxville Nationals championship as a World of Outlaws car owner with driver Danny Lasoski on Aug. 14.
